Dr. Joe Boffa

Dr. Joe is from Babbitt, on Minnesota’s Iron Range. He attended and played college hockey and baseball at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and also played hockey for three years at Northern Arizona University.
His lengthy coaching experience includes Berger Foundation, Coachella Valley Jr. Firebirds, Desert Blaze, Riverside Coyotes & the Palm Desert Knights.
Joe is a retired educator, having taught at Mecca School, Desert Mirage High School, Cal State University, San Bernardino, in the Teacher Credentialing program, and also served nine years as a New Teacher Induction Program Manager for the Riverside County Office of Education.
Joe lives in Rancho Mirage with his wife Patty (former school nurse for PSUSD). They have 3 children, 4 grandchildren (including identical twin boys), and one on the way…

I have over 26 years of hockey experience and 10 years of competitive youth travel hockey experience. I have attended hockey school at Okanagan, Penticton, BC and hockey camps in Las Vegas. I work with men and women of all ages. I specialize the lesson plans based on the skater’s experience and skill level.

Robert Wambaugh
Hockey Coach
I bring more than 10 years of youth hockey coaching experience to the Berger Foundation Iceplex. Throughout my coaching career, I have worked with Peewee through High School players in organizations including the San Francisco Sabercats, Tahoe Grizzlies, Washington Jr. Capitals, and Space Coast Hurricanes. I’ve had the privilege of helping teams reach championship games and tournament victories while focusing on player development, confidence, and fostering a positive team culture.
As a USA Hockey-certified coach, I believe hockey is about much more than developing skills on the ice. It’s an opportunity to teach teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship, and life lessons that players will carry with them long after they leave the rink. My goal is to help every player improve their abilities, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love for the game.
I’m excited to be part of the Berger Foundation Iceplex and contribute to the continued growth of hockey throughout the Coachella Valley.
Frank Galvez
Level 1 USA Hockey Certified Coach
Growing up in Fontana, California, Frank developed a love for watching hockey at a young age. After graduating high school, he joined the military in 2008 and served until 2012, specializing in weapons and explosives. Since 2014, Frank has worked for the California Department of Corrections.
Frank is a proud father of two hockey-playing children Jax, 11, and Hailey, 15. His firsthand experience as parent of young athletes has fueled his passion for the sport and provided him with a unique perspective on coaching.
Frank’s coaching philosophy centers on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship, ensuring each player reaches their full potential both on and off the ice. He is dedicated to fostering a positive and competitive environment for his players.
In his spare time, Frank enjoys staying active and continuously learning about the latest coaching techniques and strategies to help his team succeed. His enthusiasm for hockey and commitment to his players’ growth make him a valuable asset to the team.

I’m Ryan, a proud Coachella Valley local, and I’m in my second-year coaching at the Berger Foundation Iceplex. Right now, I’m an assistant coach for the Jr. Firebirds 10U A team. My goal is straightforward: keep the kids inspired, ensure they’re having a blast, and help them discover the joy of hockey, just as I did.
I became a coach because I wanted to contribute to the growth of the hockey community in the Coachella Valley. Watching these players grow, gain confidence, and enjoy their time at the rink is what keeps me coming back each day.
Charlie Peterson

Originally from Minnesota, I began skating at the age of 3 and played organized hockey for 14 years. I competed at the high school level for Benilde-St. Margaret’s in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, where I developed a strong foundation in the game.
Since 2015, I’ve been coaching youth sports and enjoy helping young athletes build their skills, confidence, and love for hockey in a positive and encouraging environment.
Ainsley Forsyth

Hi! I am Ainsley Forsyth and I have grown up playing hockey as a desert native for 14 years. Of these 14 years I have played competitive hockey and most recently played with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 18U AA team this past season. Throughout these years I have also really loved helping out with the younger kids around the rink and have found it so rewarding coaching here at the Berger Foundation Iceplex!
Approved Iceplex staff coaches and JR Firebird coaches are allowed to teach on Stick & Puck and Public session. No sticks or pucks allowed on public sessions. All coaches must abide by Stick & Puck code of conduct.
VISITING COACHES
All visiting coaches are asked to contact management 7 days prior to coming to the facility. Visiting coaches must be approved by hockey manager prior to coaching. All visiting coaches will need to fill out a guest coach packet and provide the following:
- Proof of liability insurance
- USA Hockey membership
- Safesport credentials
- Signed guest coaching agreement
Visiting coaches will be contacted by hockey management with final approval instructions.
